Hi Dave, my friend brought his PR40 over to test it against the new RE320. He also ran it through the FireStudio Mobile. I think will purchase the FireStudio Mobile It excellent. I did like the PR40 but after the test I will purchase the RE320. It had a smoother bottom end. And a slight softer topend. Also I do like the look of the New RE320.

Wow, that's really cool! I've listened to Bill a few times on KFI - great host! I haven't seen anything about the RE320 - it looks very interesting. Are you looking to buy that over the Heil?

Hi Dave, KFI, KOST and KIIS all have the RE27.
A friend of mine is now working at KFI. He never went to radio school. He started at a radio station in northern Ontario Canada. His name is Bill Carroll. Electrovoice has just launched the new RE320. I tested it over the weekend. It sounds more like the PR40 and it sells for only $300.00 us/ca.
Thanks.

Yep - I'm a rather avid listener of KFI (via my Android device), and can nearly always tell when they are using the RE27s. They just sound, well, "eh". I'd love to get a free shockmount from Heil, but I doubt that will happen. Oh well, I'm just happy to have this awesome microphone!

Thanks for the kind words!

Thanks Dave for the reply!
You hit the RE27 on the head. The highend has a nasty top end hiss. Ryan Seacrest uses the same mic. The same distorted sound.
KFI AM640 in LosAngeles only uses RE27s disorts at the top end.
I am sell my RE27 and purchasing a HEIL PR40 I found one for only $329 Canadian. Your audio sounds better than a lot of radio stations streaming.
Heil should send you a shockmount free for promoting the PR40. You would think that with technology on the web they would have good quality samples online.
Thanks again.

Hey Don! Thanks for the comment!

I did rather extensive research before deciding on the Heil PR-40. In that time, I looked at both the EV RE20, as well as the RE27. The RE27 has a certain characteristic to it that adds just a little too much high frequency to one's voice for my liking. It's definitely a nice sounding mic, just not suited for me.

As for my interface, that's pretty simple. I'm running all of my audio through an Alesis Multimix 8 mixer. This is the Firewire version - but I'm actually using an analog signal to my soundcard for all of the recording.

In regards to the MXL 990, I'm beginning to realize how terrible that microphone sounds when put head-to-head with the PR40. First of all, the mic sounds horribly muddy. This is an inherent quality of Chinese condensers - they just sound muddy. Too much low, too little mids and highs. The maker of this microphone tried to compensate for that with making this mic extremely bright sounding without EQ - I hate that. When using the MXL, I had to EQ the heck out of it, and it still didn't sound the greatest.

One other thing - I like the fact that the PR40 is a dynamic mic. I'm sure you find this true with the RE27 as well - no sound gets in, except for my voice. That is one of the greatest qualities of these dynamic microphones. As you can see, the Noisivitca studio isn't exactly the holy grail of audio treated rooms - but the PR40 sounds good nonetheless.

I hope I've answered your questions thoroughly enough! If you'd like to know anything else, just let me know!

Hi Dave, listening form Burlington, Ontario Canada
I have the Electrovoice RE27. Did you look at this mic before purchasing the Heil PR40.
What are you using for your mic imput interface? USB or Firewire and what model?
I am surprised with the MXL 990, it sounds almost as good as the Heil PR40.
If you could let me know that would be great.
Thanks.
